WOW: Sandy Beach is published!

WOW = WIPs On Wednesdays

My quilt 'Sandy Beach' is published in this month's Down Under Quilts magazine! Here it is on the front cover!

This is a fun quilt and I really enjoyed making it. Especially so for two reasons: I was asked to create a design on a nautical theme and I had a deadline! I already had a design for a beach scene memory box so the theme was just right and an excuse to create an applique wall hanging. The deadline meant that I actually finished it instead of letting it turn into a WIP!

Something else which is so nice, is that this edition arrived in the post yesterday. This is, unfortunately, unusual. I have been published on numerous occasions and in the majority of instances I had to go out and purchase the magazines myself. Because of the editorial timeline, this is harder than it sounds as quilts are submitted months before publication and its easy to forget which edition in which magazine you think you will be appearing in! It's such a simple courtesy but one that is often overlooked.

Receiving this magazine has really made my day, thanks Down Under Quilts!

  1. I have come to the conclusion that the US has no good quilt magazines anymore - they are all the same! the ones I like are from overseas that I have seen - Australian and the one published in France - I can't remember the name of it - I occasionally buy one when I go to Little Rock at the bookstore there but it is 85 miles from me and we have no decent bookstore here that sells good quilting magazines. So no I just buy one now and then. Congratulations on having a quilt in a magazine!

  2. G'day Esther,
    I have a subscription to AP&Q (Australian Patchwork and Quilting) Magazine and have made a couple of their project quilts!
    Congrats on your front cover. I'll be sure to pick up a copy of DUQ when I am out today!!!

  3. I don't subscribe any more. Like Karen, I find too many projects are too similar. So what I do is I go down to the local book store and browse all of new issues and then buy the one that has something I want to make. I'm toying with the idea to subscribe to Machine Quilting Unlimited, but I'm still debating about it. There is so much out there on the NET. I think I would buy more Australian ones if I could see them. Your quilt is great!

  5. I use to subscribe to several magazines but found I wasn't reading them so let the subscriptions lapse. I look at the on occasion when I'm in the bookstore but still haven't made time to read any

  7. yes Quilt Mania - it was on the tip of my tongue and I couldn't remember the name of it - I find it at the bookstore that is in the larger towns in the US called Barnes & Noble - we only have a tiny bookstore here and they do not carry it.

  8. Congratulations Esther - such a lovely pattern...and a magazine cover as well! You really are so talented!

    I love Quiltmania and have a subscription. It is full of the most wonderful eye candy, and probably most closely matches my personal taste in quilts. I also subscribe to Fabrications Quilting for You. It has recently been taken over, so time will tell if it will continue to be as good.

    Here in the UK, the best-known magazines are Popular Patchwork and Patchwork and Quilting.
